Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 En Route: Arriaga to Ventura, San Luis Potosí, México. 25 July (cont) The land was mostly in agriculture now — the type population may very well have been ephemeral. 1100 we continued east on Hwy 70. We noted gopher evidence on the road cut several miles east of Arriaga. There was evidence of only 4-5 individuals so we continued eastward. 1300 We spent a few hours searching for the type locality of I. u. potosinus. JLP had given us an incorrect locality NW of San Luis Potosí and only when we re-read Dalquest's description of the habitat did we realize the mistake. We drove NE of San Luis Potosí on Hwy 57, past the turnoff to Tinaja to the small station town of Ventura (Estación Ventura). This town (few houses) is a train stop where some type of mineral cargo (mined locally) is loaded. 1630 we began trapping gophers along the SE side of the Hwy 57 road cut at a point about 30 m. NE of the railroad crossing. The gophers were quite thick allowing each of us to put out 12 sets in a short while.. By sunset we had pulled-in 12 gophers.
