Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 3 km. N Ojocaliente, 2030 m., Zacatecas, México. 23 July 0615 awoke, our bags wet with dew. We broke camp and headed south on Hwy 45 to the above locality just north of Ojocaliente (Ojo Caliente on some maps). We turned-off on the well-used dirt road which headed towards Los Pinos and another small pueblo to the east. We set out traps (MacAbees) from along this dirt road from the intersection with Hwy 45 to a point 1.5 miles east of the intersection. A map of the trapping site follows. By 1030 we had a total of 36 sets out and we pulled-in 15 gophers on our first pass. (We stopped after our 1st pass and put-up skins from yesterday). We took blood and tissue from these 15 specimens, then re-checked traps... 10 more gophers. Total Catch: 25 Thomomys umbrinus # 1500 - we took blood and tissue from the remainder of the specimens then drove into Zacatecas City. The habitat at the above locality was mainly agricultural - the native vegetation was generally Mesquite and Opuntia grassland. The soil was rocky and reddish in color. Gophers were few except in
