10 km S, 2 km W Sombrerete, 2130 m. Zacatecas, México.
22 July (cont)
daylight hours. Perhaps an early afternoon rain
explained our success yesterday afternoon. By
1400 we had a mere 16 gophers, none alive. I
finally brought in a live male, so we injected
him and later karyotyped.
Total Catch: 17 Thomomys umbrinus
1700 we broke camp and drove to Sombrerete.
JCH attempted to call home (Jimmy's birthday)
from a "Farmacia" but the place was so busy
and the people so rude (not purposely, we
think), that we finally left and headed for
Fresnillo.
We gassed-up in Fresnillo (the main highway
bypasses the town). 1900 arrived in
Zacatecas, an old Colonial city. (dirty and
dusty). A huge, ornate Cathedral sits in the
center of the city. We called our wives from
the large hotel to the north of Zacatecas. Every-
thing is fine with Davey, Emily and Julia!
We then ate at a rather expensive place (with
rather poor food) and drove about 10 mi.
5 of town to camp along the highway. Cool,
clear evening. We were very tired and
looked forward to a restful night.
