We skinned our specimens then retired about 2100.
I heard the call of an Oryzomys several
times. 0200 it began to rain heavily, so
we quickly awoke and set up the awning.
We had a very poor, wet, cold night's sleep.
22 July
10 km S, 2 km W Sombrerete, 2130 m, Zacatecas, Mexico.
0600 awoke to a very cool morning. We
haven't as yet adjusted to the 1 hour time
change as we entered Durango, (so we awoke
later than usual). Checked the Sherman traps:
25 D. merriami (+ 1 tail only)
Success: 25/100
We released all specimens and set to checking
our MacAbee traps. John had captured 7 specimens
overnight, I only 1. My specimen had been
badly damaged, possibly by a Tarantula,
so I was forced to make a skeleton. (None of
John's specimens were damaged).
We continually trapped throughout the warm,
windy day. We talked with one old man who
happened to walk by - he managed some 40
cattle that were grazing in the area. The
gophers were almost inactive throughout the
