Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 Vicinity W El Palmito, 1900 m., Sinaloa, Mexico. 21 July 0530 awoke. It had rained on and off throughout the night - usually a light rain. We checked traps: 1 Peromyscus sp. success: 1/40 0630 broke camp and drove on eastwardly. The Sierra Madre Occidental are extremely beautiful mountains! Very picturesque - numbers of rich valley and majestic canyons. We ended the steep climb from near sealevel to about 3000m elevation and began the trek across the Mexican Plateau to Durango. From la Ciudad to Durango is level to almost downhill. We were inspected again as we crossed the border into the state of Durango. (actually the inspection station was just west of El Salto). 1100 we changed money and bought supplies in Durango. This city is rather nice - cleaner than most we've seen. 1230 Drove south of town, stopped, ate lunch and dried the skins. Very pleasant, warm weather. 1430 continued south on Hwy 45 and turned off at Sombrerete. We drove 7.3 mi. S (by road) from Sombrerete. We drove to a
