pocket gopher. By 1600 no gophers so we departed this locality and drove back to Villa Union.
We turned south and drove about 1 km. to the turnoff to Durango. After fueling, we headed east across the Sierra Madre Occidental.
1730 it began to rain. We stopped for dinner at a great (and scenic) "German" Restaurant (Villa Blanca Hotel) at an elevation of 1200 m.
We were now in the pine belt and the cool, moist air was very refreshing. This hotel was owned and managed by an old German man who spoke excellent English. He had lived for a time in Santa Ana, California then bought this hotel after living in Mazatlan for a short period.
We drove about 30-40 miles further b and camped just as the sun set. A light sprinkle fell continuously. We set out 40 live traps in a steep, rocky hillside and along a steep, moist wash — we noted much leaf litter and moist vegetation on the ground, however no large brush of any kind. Pine forest with numerous epiphytes on the trees.
We put up the awning to ward-off the rain and wrote-up our field notes.
2200 retired.
