Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 1 km. N Siqueros, 50 m., Sinaloa, Mexico. 19 July (cont) traps, JCH captured 1 gopher (in a Macabee) that was still alive. I ran to the scene with a live gopher trap and we managed to bring the animal back to camp alive. 1 Thomomys umbrinus citrovarius We also noted several Sigmodon individuals running around the grassy fields during the day and JCH noted a few flocks of greenish parrots flying overhead. There were many white Egrets (of some type) along the river also. We were very pleased to have at least this one specimen to karyotype. We had run out of water earlier in the day and we now decided to celebrate by breaking out our distilled water supply... what relief in the hot sun!! 1600 headed back toward Mazatlán. Bought supplies and checked in Hotel California, just off the main drag along the beach. Except for the beach area, Mazatlán is a veritable slum. 1700-2000 we karyotyped the animals. The gopher is unlike any we've ever seen -- very sparsely haired with very procumbent incisors -- quite unlike most Thomomys. We are convinced that we have 2 species of pocket mice also. The larger form is also darker,
