particularly interested in the race of Thomomys that occurs here (T. umbrinus atrovirius) because Patton feels that this animal is very different from other umbrinus - at least morphologically.
I set out 5 sets and John 3. John turned-up a nice, large Tarantella sp? from one of his holes. We worked the few sets all afternoon. There were numerous lizards around; Iguanas (about 1 m. long!), Cuetz (Cnemidophorus), Sceloporus, etc.
1600 no catches yet. We washed-up in the muddy Rio Presidio, a fairly large river about 50 m across at this point. We talked with several local people and learned of bats in an old man-made cave just on the other side of the river - we may cross the Rio before we leave. All afternoon there were threatening clouds to the NE of us, but nothing directly overhead to block the sun. We were literally drenched in sweat in minutes and [illegible] only a light breeze to cool us.
1800 - Still no gopher catches. We set out 120 Sherman traps as per the following map.
