En Route: La Paz, BCS, to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
17 July (cont)
measured our vehicle and we passed under the
5 m. length limit. (would have cost 100 pesos
more had we been over 5 m.) As it was,
the ferry cost 600 pesos for the vehicle and
100 pesos for each of us. (800 pesos = $35 us.)
We were told to return at 1400 to begin
lining-up for the 1700 departure.
1200 we drove into town, bought more supplies
for the voyage, had a nice lunch, then
returned to the ferry.
Of course, we waited for hours for anything
to happen at the ferry docks. Although all
the Mexicans were "oficial" in some way or
another, nobody knew what was happening.
1600 we finally loaded the vehicle on the
ferry. The ship was about 400 ft. long and
probably 20-25,000 Tons (DWT). Twin screw
with a bulbous bow. Very nice... built in
germany, 1975. The vehicles were in a large
hold below all of the passenger accomodations -
we were told by one official that we could
go below to our vehicle any time we desired
during the voyage. As it turned-out, a man
selling cigarettes and chewing gum gave
us the correct story -- we couldn't go below
during the voyage. -- so we rushed below
