Journal Hafner, U.S. 1977 En Route: la Paz to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico on S on Hwy 1 (labeled "Hwy 3") on the road signs) 14 July (cont) We stopped at an old mineshaft to the S of the Hwy several miles east of San Bartolo. We found no bats in the mineshaft. 0830 arrived at the small village of Las Cuevas. We asked permission to trap "topos" in a cornfield (and nearby empty fields). We set of several sets each by 1000 at which time the heat was becoming extremely intense. Sweat was pouring off us and we could scarcely see for the dust and stinging sweat. We trapped and processed gophers until about 1400 at which time we pulled traps and headed S. Even though we didn't catch a live gopher for keyotyping, we must trap tonight for Perognathus delquesti S of Todos Santos. We pulled a total of 12 animals from the empty fields adjacent to the cornfields and we'll try to return Sunday morning to catch a few more and especially a live animal. locality: 6 km N, 10 km E Santiago, 60 m, Baja California Sur, Mexico. 12 Thomomys bottae A local dog (which we had befriended) ate the carcass of my number #45870 immediately after I had tissue and blood pulled (the last time).
