Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 10 mi. N. (by road) Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur, México. 11 July Results of trapping: success: 3/100 3 Dipodomys merriami We were again quite disappointed. To add to our stress we again became mired in the soft sand and we were extremely low on fuel. We managed to free ourselves and limp into Puerto San Carlos (arrived 0700). Of course the fuel station did not open until 0800 so we had time to catch-up on our journals. 0815 fueled, we drove back toward Ciudad Constitución. On our way we obtained 10 gals. of potable water (fresh from the well) and bought two Sandias (watermelons) for 10 pesos (45¢) each. We stopped at an alfalfa field outside of Ciudad Constitución to look for gopher signs. — The signs were numerous, so we set out 12 sets apiece (by 1030). We trapped throughout the very hot day which later became extremely windy and dusty. I had much more luck than John today and pulled-in the majority of gophers. These were large, light brown animals — very beautiful. The adult males were scroted and many females were
