Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 Ciudad Constitución, Baja California Sur, México. 10 July (cont) on the road west of Ciudad Constitución to check the area near Puerto San Carlos for gopher signs - we saw few. We drove to a point : 10 mi. N (by road) Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur, México , where we set out 100 Sherman traps in a sandy desert- scrub habitat. about ½ mi. S of the main road. The plants all appeared to be in very poor health - especially the tall cacti. - perhaps the local irrigation has lowered the water table below some critical level. There is much tomatoe and alfalfa farming in the area of Villa Insurgente and Ciudad Constitución. We were attacked by numerous mosquitos, so after getting stuck (again) in the sand and finally escaping , we drove back to Ciudad Constitución . We had a fairly nice dinner in a rather shabby joint then drove a few miles west of town and camped on a dirt farm-road - much dust throughout the night- and little relief from the mosquitos.
