The day was 18 (plus the animal that John had captured on the 7th) making a total of 19 animals. (Thomomys bottae cactophilus)

9 July
0530 arose, packed-up and headed S on Hwy 1 for Guerrero Negro. 0900 arrived Guerrero Negro, gassed-up, bought some juices and headed SE on Hwy 1 for Santa Rosalia. We noted a Caracara (Falconiformes) eating a road-kill just SE of Guerrero Negro.
The ride from Guerrero Negro to S. Rosalia was very hot, but rapid. We descended the eastern slopes of the main mountain chain and drove about 2 mi. further south into Santa Rosalia. The heat and humidity were both very high. We looked for a motel and finally ended-up in a rather "classy" hotel about 1 mi. S of the main town on Hwy 1. The room cost us 300 pesos for the night (ca. $13.60) which was quite expensive but our only alternative was a flea-bitten motel in the center of town. The town itself was rather small consisting of 2
