4 July (cont)
goats through the area. They, of course, knew
nothing of our missing traps. John scouted
around for awhile and found the traps about
1/4 mi. away stashed neatly inside the leaves
of an agave. I later found 3 traps also
stashed away [to be picked-up later]. In total
we lost only 2 traps - very lucky.
All day long, people with goat herds passed
through the area. After capturing 4 Spermophilus
tereticaudus and 2 A. leucurus we pulled all
the sherman traps to avoid further loss. (1300).
Today was especially hot - no cloud cover as
yesterday. We worked the Mcabee traps all
day with little success. John captured 2
gophers alive which were kept for kanotyping later.
1800 we put-up the gophers we had captured
yesterday and this AM. We then set out more
McAbee's and drove into town for water and
beer.
2100 retired after setting out 20 sherman trap;
it a rather weak effort to capture an
Onychomys we heard calling. Sounded rather
unlike the Onyx I'm used it [illegible]. Cold night,
but not as wet as last night.
