3 July (cont)
de la Trinidad. We noted a place to get Potable H2O and bought some fruit juices,
vegetables (for live animals) and some Cervezas
for later. The town, like most towns we've
passed through, is miserably poor — more
windowless shacks and Ochotillo fences. Old
junk cars everywhere. The town has at
least 1 store and a few old broken-down
restaurants — also a "modern" bank is
being built at the west end of town. The
streets are dirt and filled with gullies
and ditches.
The Valle de la Trinidad is a beautiful
valley — it lies E-W and is quite long.
The surrounding hillsides have barrel
cactus and a few Pinjun Junipers. (Mesquite)
dominates - as on the valley floor. Much
of the valley is currently in agriculture,
however.
We returned to camp and set-out 200
sherman traps in the Mesquite-Cholla
association to the north of the road. The
soil's surface is filled with holes belonging
to at least 2 species of ground Squirrels
(Ammospermophilus leucurus and Spermusolulus
