1.9 mi. (by road) E la Joyita, 210 m, Sonora, México.
0515 J.C. Hafner and I departed Richmond,
California headed for a 2 month collecting
trip in Mexico. Drove south on Hwy 5 to
Los Angeles then east on I-10. Turned south
at Indio and at 1600 arrived at Calexico.
Bought Insurance (for Mexico) for 45 days
at a total cost of $145.00. Crossed the
border with little incident and drove east
on Mexico Hwy 2, through San Luis Rio
Colorado to the above locality in Sonora.
Very hot day -- moderate wind from the SE.
As we headed east out of San Luis we
encountered more and more Sahuaro cacti.
The "town" of la Joyita is very small
and located some 44 mi. E of San Luis.
We set out 100 traps in each of the following
localities:
6.3 mi. (by road) W la Joyita, 180 m, Sonora, México.
1.9 mi. (by road) E la Joyita, 210 m, Sonora, México.
The vegetation at the 1st locality was
principally Larrea with Cholla and some
few Sahuaro cacti. We set traps in the gravelly
sand to the north of the Hwy just as the
Hwy began to enter the Penecate Mtns.
The 2nd locality (where we camped) was
