Journal Hafner, U.S. 1976 6 mi. N , 31 mi. W Hiko , 4800 ft., Lincoln Co., Nevada 17 September 1200 Barron and I departed Richmond and drove S on U.S. 580 then to S, thru Tracy and onto Hwy 120. Drove over Tioga Pass (Cool at 9,000 ft.+), then continued east on 120, through Benton, then east on U.S. 6. Occasional heavy clouds overhead as I crossed the Sierra, clear to the east however. Got a ticket just as I entered Tonopah - Speed trap! Sun set as I departed Tonopah toward Warm Springs. Turned east on Hwy 25 at Warm Springs and arrived at the contact zone (above locality) = Penoyer Valley at 2030. Commenced to set out snap traps for stomach contents data - Battery for headlamp was dead - so set traps with the aid of the Coleman lantern. Very comfortable evening ~55° light breeze, clear. Trap setting went very slowly as many of the Museum Specials were brand new and required adjustment. 2330 - finished setting 208 Museum Specials as per the map on the following page. Had a slight scare when Barron wandered-off and soon thereafter I heard Coyote howls quite near - Barron was alright. There is much evidence of recent rains here.
