Journal Hafuer, M.S. 1976 22 August (cont) Nogal Canyon, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. 1700 Departed Nogal Canyon and re-fueled in Capitan. Proceeded SE'ly on Hwy 380 then Hwy 70 to Roswell. Sighted 2 dead Porcupines (Erethizon) on Hwy W of Roswell. Turned South on Hwy 285. Noted 2 dead Badgers (Taxidea) on Hwy 285 South of Roswell. 2000 turned SW on Hwy 137 and drove to the deserted shack called "Queen" on the map. Camped near "Queen" - hot-dogs & beer. Pleasant evening - slept out. - 1 mi. N, 23.3 mi. W Whites City, 5800 ft. Eddy Co., New Mexico. 23 August 0700 Awoke and drove approx. 2 mi. further on Hwy 137 to the above locality - set out all McAbee traps in a meadow adjacent to a cattle pond (and across the road.) Worked traps all day; Very warm afternoon. Set up our "lab" for taking blood and tissue about mid-morning and by early evening we had 14 gophers. We decided to leave the traps out while we put-up skins. 1900 departed the above locality and drove NE on Hwy 137 back to Hwy 285. Headed South, through Artesia to Carlsbad. We ate dinner in Carlsbad (John phoned Patti - all's well). 2130 Departed Carlsbad, heading
