Journal Hafner, U.S. 1976 4.0 mi. S, 3.2 mi. W Nogal, 7800 ft., Lincoln Co., N. Mexico. 22 August (can't) Habitat Descriptions: ("Pure" ruidosae habitat). #1 - Northern-most (captured 10 August) Burrow depth = 150 mm.; 3 M from very small tree ~ 3M tall or Elderberry? (Fraxinus?) Sparse vegetation save for "lawn" of grass ~ 20cm tall. Sparse Creek A plant covers entire meadow. Very few Creek B plants, Few Creek C plants. Very slight NE'ly slope to ground. Very few Plant D (Creek) - Hole 10 M from Creek #2 (Caught 11 August) - 20 M from Creek - very slight slope to E. Approx. 8 M from Oak (Quercus gambelii). Burrow depth ~ 120 mm. Mod. dense grasses ~ Ficus? Very few Plant A General: Meadow approx 100 x 25 M with approx. 9 gopher systems currently active. Trees include Quaking tremuloides Gambel quercus little Aspen (Populus), Oak (Quercus), Walnut (juglans) Rocky Mtn. Maple (Acer glabrum-), Juniperus - both depeana and monosperma. Pines entirely, surround the meadow - Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) - Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa); Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga) and white Fir (abies concolor). Other gopher systems are located in fairly dense stands of Plant A (Creek A). Rose bushes (Rosa) near creek. 1430 Drove to "Contact Zone" in Nogal Canyon. Intermittent rain all afternoon.
