Journal Hafner, M.S. 1976 Nogal Canyon, 2.8 mi. S, 2.0 mi. W Nogal, 7300 ft. Lincoln Co., New Mexico 18 August (in it) in the traps; one from exposure (MSH 609) and the other had a broken back from the trap door. The rain fell almost continually all morning and early afternoon. In total we captured 10 animals before departing for Ruidoso. 1530- We were soaked from the rains - pulled traps and headed for Ruidoso. There was evidence of recent rain at the "Bar" locality (where we think we found an F2 individual) - so we decided to hit this area while it's still threatening to rain. We set out traps and captured animals as per the map on the following page. Drove back to Ruidoso and camped at the Cedar Creek Campground (after getting supplies in town). light drizzle at about midnight. 19 August Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., 6700 ft; New Mexico. 0745 Awoke and checked traps. Caught 5 gophers. Many holes were plugged - others were untouched. Heavy clouds overhead - but no rain all day. Checked and re-checked traps throughout the day, only to catch one more gopher. 1700 returned to camp. 1930 re-checked traps - caught 1 Thomomys. Fed all animals that were previously captured - 1 had died in trap.
