Journal Hafner, U.S. 1976 16 August Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., New Mexico. (nic) nice dinner and relaxing evening. I neglected to mention that, while at UNM, we looked at E.R. Hall's original description of Thomomys bottae ruidosae (1932, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash. 45:96). Nothing very exciting - had no mention of the obvious habitat preferences we have noted for these "races". 17 August Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., New Mexico. 0700 awoke, ate breakfast and 0900 departed Albuquerque for the Sacramento Mtns. Drove via Hwy 25 South to Hwy 380 then east to Nogal (Hwy 37). The clouds were becoming quite threatening by 1130. We noted a Cooper's Hawk sitting on the highway about 10 mi. west of Carrizozo. Not sure why the hawk was on the road, but we almost ran him over as he took off. 1230. Set all traps (38) out in the area of the contact zone in Nogal Canyon. Occasional light rainfall all afternoon. (Captures as per map on following page). We noted that we were catching both dark, small animals (ruidosae) and larger, lighter animals to the north (actusus). John noted a Tamiasciurus cache on the west side of the creek near the trapping area - and later he spotted the animal nearby.
