Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., New Mexico.
16 August
We awoke in Carrizozo, 0730, ate breakfast
and drove via Hwy 380 and Hwy 25 to
Albuquerque. The Mal Pais lava flows were
quite impressive (Just west of Carrizozo).
1230 arrived at University of New Mexico
where we met Dave at the Museum of
Southwestern Biology. We gathered up the
supplies we needed (Acetone, rubber-bulbs,
immersion oil, slide boxes, "Mammals of New
Mexico", etc.) then examined the slides we
had already karyotyped. We were able to
positively identify all but one specimen (HST
608) from the "Bar" locality near Ruidoso.
This individual had 22 acrocentrics (by our
determination) making it an F2 individual
of the 4 and 28 acrocentric parental types.
The resolution wasn't too good and we didn't
have the time to properly examine the slides.
We did, however determine that the break
between the "races" occurs (as suspected) between
the "large Meadow" and the "Creek" locality
in Nogal Canyon and somewhere very near
the "Bar" locality in the Ruidoso area. We
now know where to concentrate our efforts.
1800 left UNM for Dave's home. Dave's mother,
Gladys, was visiting them. We had a very
