Journal Hafner, MS 1976 Various locales, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. 7 August Checked and re-checked traps all day - very warm day - no rain (ca. 90°F). Captured 1 gopher at the locality: 1.2 mi. S, 7 mi. E Capitan 1 Thomomys bottae 140s ate rabbit that I collected yesterday. Had watermelon for dessert. Checked 2 caves near Lake Nogal for bats - no bats. Camped on the dirt road connecting Hwy 380 with Hwy 37 (road to Lake Nogal). Drove into Lincoln to visit the "last escape of Billy the Kid Pagent" - Lincoln's claim to fame. Not much happening there. Had a couple beers at the bar in Capitan then drove to camp. 8 August Various locales, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. 0800 drove via Hwy 37 into Ruidoso, then via Hwy 70 to Mescalero - checked traps - no success. (Pulled traps). Returned to locality near Ruidoso - Captured: 1 Thomomys bottae locality: 1.3 mi. S, 2.8 mi. E Ruidoso. Drove further NE on Hwy 70. Called Dave Hafner to tell him of our poor trapping results so that he could pass the word
