Journal Hahner, U.S. 1976 Various locales, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. 6 August 0800 awoke, had breakfast and checked McAbee traps - no results. - traps were buried. Set several more McAbee's near Hwy. 70 about 1 mi. SW of the Hwy 37 intersection - 1300 drove SW on Hwy 70 and chose new locality to set live traps: 0.5 mi. NE Mescalero, 6600 ft. Otero Co. Set 3 live sets (4 traps) and 3 McAbee sets (=4 traps). 1500 checked traps at 1st locality - no captures; again traps were buried. Checked traps at Mescalero locality; captured 1 Thomomys bottae (caught in live trap but crushed by door). We used this animal's carcass to smear Gopher swell over all live traps. 1600 drove via Hwy 70 to Hwy 380 and then NE to check all localities. Captured 1 Thomomys bottae at the locality: 2.7 mi. N, 6.5 mi. W Capitan, Lincoln Co. I also shot an additional Sylvilagus there. We drove back to check the entire circuit of traps and camped on a side road near Mescalero. Very cold night - cloudless with a full moon.
