Journal Hafner, M.S. 1976 Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., ~6000 ft., New Mexico. 5 August (cont) not appear to be in breeding condition. We hiked for a short while in the canyon north of the highway noting many cacti (both Mammalaria and Cholla) in the mixed Juniper-Pine forest. Much gopher evidence also. I noted a Peromyscus sp. in a hollow of an upright stump. We attempted to catch it but couldn't. 2000 We drove E to check our traps. Again no results. We returned to Hondo via Hwy 380 noting a 4-point buck deer on the road about 5 mi. NW of Hondo. We drove west on 70 and checked the traps from yesterday. We reasoned that the foreign odor of the brand-new traps may be the problem, so we put grain (oats) in every trap on Hwy 70 to see if we might get better results. If not, we'll smear all traps with "gopher guts" tomorrow to give them a "gopher-like" odor — perhaps that will attract the animals? I set a McAbee trap at the locality nearest Ruidoso to get our animal to scent the traps. 2300 wrote-up field notes and retired at 2400. Nice day today. Ca. 90° F — almost cloudless sky — light breeze.
