journal Hafner, M.S. 1976 Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., ~6000 ft., New Mexico. 5 August (We had left all of last nights gopher sets (cont) out except for the Alto locality and the SW of Ruidoso locality where we caught the gopher.) We could find no traces of gophers an further E. than approximately 2 mi. E of Glencoe. We finally realized that these gophers were high altitude animals and we were losing altitude as we approached Hondo. We then decided to set near the Capitan Mtne. in the valley of the Rio Bonito. We drove NW on Hwy 380 from Hondo and set 4 new localities stretching from E of Lincoln to W of Capitan (exact localities below). 1900 we drove back into Capitan where we had a real nice Mexican meal. John then bought a 6-pack and we drove out to check the traps. At the western-most locality: (2.7mi. N, 6.5 mi. W Capitan, 6800 ft., Lincoln Co, New Mexico.) I shot an adult o cottontail Sylvilagus audoboni I took skull and tissue. The animal did
