Journal Hafner, M.S. 1976 Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., 6000 ft., New Mexico. 4 August (cont) At this locality (6.6 mi. S, 0.5 mi. W Ruidoso, 7600 ft., Otero Co., New Mexico.) we captured: 1 Thomomys bottae Probably of the race ruidosae. We will be sure when we karyotype. I neglected to mention that we checked into a motel in Ruidoso. --$120/night !!! The racing at Ruidoso Downs resumes tomorrow and all motel are filling-up... so rates are very high. The town of Ruidoso itself, is quite nice - very "touristy" with little shops and ski and tennis shops, etc. 2230 completed trap checking. As mentioned above, very poor results for 5 localities effort. We called home - all is fine. 5 August Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., ~6000 ft., New Mexico. 0900 arose, ate breakfast in town. Checked all trap sets - no captures. Can't figure why. Many traps are plugged, but in many cases the hole is plugged right at the trap entrance. -Anyway... we were having quite a few problems with the trigger mechanism on some of the traps so we returned to the motel room and worked on them. 1300 departed Ruidoso. Drove NW on Hwy 70 in search of new localities closer to Hondo.
