As soon as we arrived, we began putting up the 23 McAbee caught gophers - (an additional 3 we caught live - JLP kept them for later karyotyping.) 2130 finished preparing the animals. Warm evening with almost no breeze. We sat and talked 'till almost midnight. Jim and Carol set up their tent due to ominous weather to the NW - JCH and I slept out on cots - but we kept the tarp handy in case of rain. 0030 (4 August) light rain followed by one heavy cloudburst, then a peaceful night. (ca. 65° F). No traps out this evening. All the specimens captured today we catalogued in JLP's catalogue. 4 August Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., New Mexico, ~6000 ft. 0700 awoke and began to break camp. Jim and Carol got up a little later. We observed a Muskrat (Ondatra) in a small pond near camp, then departed for Las Cruces. Jim and Carol headed north to trap along the Rio Grande.
