in Las Cruces for some supplies. It is a very
nice mornings. Warm (~70°F) and clear.
1000 Drove from las Cruces via Hwy 85 north
to Radium Springs, then south 0.8 mi. to
the banks of the Rio Grande. We stopped
by the road on the SW side of the river
and from there we set out in 4 directions
to set gopher traps (McAbee). John and
I set along the northern edge of the
river, but had real difficulty finding fresh
gopher evidence. The heat during the
late morning was apparently resulting in
very little gopher (above ground) activity. We
searched several fields including pastures,
open fields, and alfalfa fields. Finally, about
1400 we found a hot-spot of gophers in the
pasture on the NW bank of the river.
1600 - We continually checked traps and returned
the specimens for processing. Jim had the
lab set-up in the back of his VW Van - we
took tissue and blood (and made labels).
1830 JCH noted several bats (Tadarida?)
feeding near the bridge - no bats could
be seen roosting below the bridge. We
picked-up "camp" and drove across the
