9 July
1200: Darcey, Emily, Barron and I departed Richmond
and drove via Hwy 580 and 5 to Bakersfield. 1700
Van overheated in Bakersfield traffic (~100°F). We
stopped to allow the engine to cool off...No further
trouble - appears that the thermostat stuck closed.
Continued over Tehachapi Pass and Hwy 14 to the
camp I locality (above).
1330 - Set out 136 live traps in 4 directions from
camp. The substratum is very dry and contains
only dried-up annual from the wet winter of 2
years ago. There are numerous rodent diggings on
the surface - perhaps the rodents are recovering
surface caches due to the low productivity of
the vegetation this very dry year.
2030 - Sun set. Still very warm ~80°F with a
strong breeze from the SW. Moon (full) rose about
1930. We slept in the van to stay out of the wind.
