San Joaquin Valley Vicinity of Buttonwillow, Kern Co., California
13 June (cont)
standard Road. We stopped at an area of natural Atriplex habitat about 4 mi. S. Shafter (in the Rio Bravo Oil Fields). We set out 50 traps here then drove south and turned west on Hwy 58. We stopped and turned north onto a dirt road about 9.6 mi. East of Buttonwillow. This area encompasses about 20 sections of natural Atriplex habitat - Originally part of the Kern River Flood Plain. We set-up a grid of 10 x 10 traps, 10 meters apart, so as to cover 1 hectare.
2000 Finished setting traps - then had a few beers and crashed. Warm, calm night - Full moon.
14 June San Joaquin Valley, vicinity of Buttonwillow, Kern Co., California
0630 awoke to bright, warm morning. Checked traps in grid:
9 D. nitratoides (2 young)
There was very strong evidence that D. nitratoides plug their burrow entrances at times. - should be looked into. A predator (probably a kit-fox) had passed through the grid during the night and urinated and defecated on a few of the traps.
We released all animals then drove to the locality south of Shafter. Results:
1 D. nitratoides
2 A. nelsoni
