1976
San Joaquin Valley, Vicinity of Buttonwillow, Kern Co., Calif.
June 3
1000 John Hafner and I drove via Livermore
and I-5 to Hwy 98 (NE of Coalinga.) We turned
E and drove to Hwy 41 where we turned south.
Just before the intersection of Hwy 41 we stopped
and set out 50 live traps in a Salicornia-Suaeda
habitat near the road. This was an attempt to
capture D. nitratoides nitratoides at its northernmost
range (assuming the Kings River to be a natural
sub-specific boundary). (Calif. Fish and Game Project.)
- On the trip down Hwy 5 (mentioned earlier)
John and I noticed fairly extensive sand dune
regions on the hill-tops of the Diablo Range approximately
25 miles SW of Mendota - on the west side of I-5.
Good potential habitat for Dipodonyx and Perognathus.
- Anyway, we drove by Guernevy, Calif.
then turned south on Hwy 43. We continued S
then turned East on a farmroad about 1 mi. N of
Angiola. We set 50 traps in semi-natural Suaeda
habitat just south of the road about 1 mi. N, 2 mi
E of Angiola. (Actual locality taken from Tipton).
We drove south to the Pixley locality of 12th
February and set out 50 traps as before. We paced
these off so as to cover an area of approximately
2000 sq meters. We continued S on Hwy 43 through
Wasco and Shafter then turned west onto 7th
