April 17 (cut)
Carrizo Plain, San Luis Obispo Co., California, 1000 ft.
1030 after checking traps, we drove over the Temblor Range on Hwy 58 east and stopped along-side the road to put of skins (1030-1300). Very beautiful day. ~70°F, light breeze, clear. 1300 drove into McKutrick (no gas) then S. to Taft for gas.
We originally planned to set in the Kern River Wash (SW of Bakersfield) so we drove on Hwy 119 and circled the Kern River area (vicinity of Old River) — saw nothing of suitable habitat for anything except beechy ground squirrels.
(barren land, no perennial vegetation to speak of.)
We then drove S. or on Old River Road to Maricopa Hwy (= Hwy 166). A small patch of apparently natural habit is found just west of Old River Rd. (south) after the junction with Hwy 5 — but we saw no evidence of rodent activity and much evidence that occasional flood flooding occurs (Being in the Buena Vista lake bed). We saw patches of native vegetation on both sides of Hwy 166 about S mi. E of Maricopa — I'm sure D. nitratoides occurs here — I saw no reason to trap for them (Fish and Game Project). I called Darcey from Maricopa and warned her we were coming home. 1700 departed Maricopa via Rt. 5 to Pleasant Hill in time for Easter Dinner tomorrow.
