0.8 mi. N, 6 mi. W Lost Hills, 500 ft, Kern Co., California
April 1000 Dacey, Emily, Baron and D departed
Richmond in the Van and drove S on 580 via
Oakland, Livermore and I-5 to a point 8 mi N
and 3.5 mi W of Lost Hills. [The purpose of this
trip is to collect Dipodomys nitratoides for the Fish & Game
survey.] We drove about 0.5 mi W on Twisselman Rd.
and set 60 live traps just N of the road. [The
habitat will be described below (see 10 April)]. The
sky was clear; warm day (~70°) with a light
Wly breeze. I heard the "chirps" of Ammospermophilus
at this locality. We then drove E on Twisselman Rd
toward the Kern Nat. Wildlife Refuge. After about 1/2
hour on levee roads we arrived at the NW corner
of the refuge. The habitat within the fence was
fairly suitable Dipodomys habitat. — not especially promising.
We continued S along the Western edge of the
refuge and then turned E along the Southern edge.
Found no suitable habitat outside the refuge until
almost 1 mile from the main highway that forms
the Eastern border of the Refuge. (Little or no
good Dipodomys habitat within the Refuge). We set
out 60 traps about 1 mi. from the road on the
Southern border of the Refuge, then drove to the
Highway (= Corcoran Road). We drove North along the Eastern
edge of the Refuge and then W along the Northern
