23 March
Barron and I departed Richmond 245. Drove
via Sacramento, Truckee, Reno to a point 5.6 mi
N. Sparks, Nevada. 1100 set out 60 traps (shrews) in
Artemisia tridentata community to NW of Hwy 33 (just
off the road.) at a point 5.6 mi. N. of Sparks. The
Artemisia were fairly dense, spaced 1-2 ft. and
approx. .7 - 1.0 ft. tall. There were a few Chrysanthemums
and very few Junipers. Loose, medium-fine sandy
soil - overlaid with light gravel. Much rodent
evidence and active ant-hills. I found a Coyote
(Canis latrans) skull. 1200 drove further NE on Hwy
33 just past the "Rifle-range" and turned NE onto
a dirt road heading toward Pond Peak. Stopped at
a point 3 mi E., 7 mi. N Sparks and set out 70 live
traps in Artemisia tridentata community. Again, there
were a few Chrysanthemums (no junipers). The substrate
was loose, fine powder. Ants were active. Weather was
partly cloudy with the fairly strong winds from the
NW. (~60°F).
1230 departed this locality and drove back to Sparks
then via US 395 North to California Hwy 70. Drove over
Beckworth Pass (5212 ft.) to the vicinity of the Chilcot,
California cemetery. Set 60 live traps in fine, powdery,
sand just N of the cemetery. Artemisia tridentata
community with the spaced Chrysanthemums. Artemisia spaced
approximately 2-3 ft. Drove further on Hwy 70 to Chilcot.
