Vicinity S and E of Bakersfield, Kern Co., Calif.
Creek Wash where Dave, Diane, Darcy and I
trapped a year or so ago is no longer natural
habitat but a farmers field. I drove further
NE up Caliente Creek Wash and found an
area of natural habitat just beyond the
railroad trestle N of the road. Set 50 traps in
grevelly sand in vegetation almost entirely
composed of Lepidospartum squamatum up to 1.5 M
tall. (5-8 m apart).
1600 Drove back to Hwy 58 the further S on
Comanche Road to a point beyond Comanche
Point. I tried to find natural habitat to the
East, but saw none. Returned to Hwy 99 and
set trap in a section of natural habitat near
the Warring Rd. turnoff (west of the Hwy.). Vegetation
was fairly dense plant Salicornia (subterminalis) 0.5-1.5
meters tall, 1.5 m apart with some few Atriplex
lentiformis . Very little annual vegetation on
substrate (and soil was hard-pack and puddled
from recent rains).
1730 Drove into Bakersfield and had dinner with
Donna and Rich from Fish and Game. Called
Darcy and 1900 returned to the last locality.
Slept the night near the Warring Rd. Off ramp
(Hwy 99).
