had adverse effect on captures. 0800 returned
via Sierraville to Sageren Creek. Put-up
animals until noon. 1430 departed Sageren
Creek and returned via Truckee and
Sacramento to Berkeley.
Hastings, Natural History Reservation, 14 mi. SE Carmel
Valley, Monterey Co., 1700 ft. California
21 November
0930 Departed NWZ and drove via Hwy 101 S
to Salinas, then west on 68 to the Carmel
Valley Cutoff (~10 mi. W of Salinas). Drove SE
from Carmel Valley on G1b to the Hastings Reser-
vation. Very nice weather, ~70°F, light breeze,
few Cirrus clouds. Only ½ of the Mammalogy
class has come on this trip (=12 people). We
proceeded to set out our museum special
traps in the 3 established Calhoun lines
on the reservation (grassland, oak-woodland, and
chaparral). I set out 20 traps with 2 other
people (=60 traps) in the oak-woodland community
south of the Davis house (on "water-tank"
hill.). This habitat is actually very dry
and sparse for typical oak-woodland, and
does not appear productive (with the
