September 5 (cont)
Snakes perched on poles along the way. We had coffee in a small cafe and waited on the lawn beside the post office for a couple hours.
1300 - John and Dave Nafner drove into town in the Datsun station wagon. We ate lunch, got fuel and needed NE of 80. We drove to a point about 7 mi S. of Winnemucca where we set out 100 traps in fine, sandy soil. Brush was rather thick in this area.
We continued north and turned due north on Hwy 95. We set out 160 traps in fine sand dunes about 7 mi North of Winnemucca. We then continued north turning NW on Hwy 140 to just S. of Denio, Nevada. Very warm day. We noted a Prairie Falcon and Golden Eagle on poles along Hwy 140. We stopped on the road approximately 20 mi S. Denio to observe 2 Rattlesnakes (diamondback - Crotalus) crossing the road - the snakes were actually about 2 miles apart on the road - both are adults 35-40 cm. We set 100 traps 5 mi. S Denio and 170 traps 0.6 mi S. Denio. The sun was down before we finished setting. I golden trap was set at the latter locality. We camped 5 mi. S Denio.
