Journal Hofner, M.S. 1975 2 mi. E. Searles Station, 9 mi. NNE Johannesburg, 3206 ft Kern San Bernardino Co., California. 26 April. 0700 Arose to a bright, windy day. Checked traps with following results: 129 Perognathus longimembris 16 P. formosus 30 Dipodomys panamintinus 11 D. merriami 21 Onychomys torridus 2 Ammospermophilus leucurus (1 ad, 1 juv) 1 Peromyscus maniculatus Success = 210/400 = 52.5% While checking traps, I noted a small Sceloporus lizard impaled on a hawthorn twig, obviously the work of a Shrike (Lanius). Dave captured a rather long (~1 meter) Gopher snake (Pituophis). Saw numerous whiptail lizards (Cnemidophorus). Dave and I dug up several Dipodomys burrows, but only 1 was a real vest burrow. (Dm.0°). [Picture on next page]. While digging the burrow a very large (~110 mm) Centipede crawled up Davis pant leg. Luckily, he wasn't bitten. 1400 - We organized the animals - I took back all Dipot's and Dave took back (to N.M.) 2 of each species. We then departed via US 395 and 14 to Walker Pass to trap a Dipodomys panamintinus locality.
