4 April
5 mi. E. California City, Kern Co., 2500', California.
1700 Dacey, Baron and I left L.A. and arrived at this locality at dusk. Dacey wasn't feeling too well (expecting in November) so I set out 200 traps in 4 lines from camp. In Larrea, Atriplex, Chrysothamnus community. There were many yellow annuals blooming forming a low, yellow carpet. The night was cold and windy. I noted 1 call of an Onychomys while setting traps (~1930).
5 April
5 mi. E. California City, Kern Co., 2500', California.
0830 - wind died down - I checked traps with following results:
23 Perognathus formosus
5 Onychomys torridus
9 Dipodomys merriami
3 Dipodomys peninsularis
8 Perognathus longimembris
48/200 = 24% success
I was surprised not to catch any Peromyscus. Clouds moved in ~0930 and a light rain fell. We decided to head home as trapping would not be too good after a rain. 1200 - headed for L.A.
