"Journal" Hafner, m.s. 1975 18 March Vicinity of Mojave and Boron, California Roland Leong and I left L.A. at 0700 heading towards Mojave. We arrived at my trapping locality ~3 mi. N. of Mojave at 0830. We proceeded to measure vegetation spacing and density as per the following method: a string 25 meters long was stretched in the N, S, E, and W directions from a randomly chosen central location. Each plant (perennial) that touched the string was measured and identified. We used greatest overall breadth of the plant and this was multiplied by our "density factor", i.e., the percentage of a 3x5" index card that was NOT visible when the card was held behind the shrub. We took several measurements of each shrub, then averaged them together to get average density. [100% would be very dense, 10% would be very sparse]. 1000- We headed towards Sand Canyon locality where we took more vegetation samples and measurements. Soil samples were taken at the end of each 25 meter line (4 for each locality). There were patches of snow on the ground at the Sand Canyon locality ~ clear day, cold, slight wily breeze.
