sight to the South of camp. About 1/2
hour later Darcy noticed the fox within
about 8 meters of where we were standing.
The fox squinted its eyes as I shined
my searchlight toward it, but did not
retreat for several seconds. We
followed the fox for a short while
and watched it rub its cheek on
a telephone pole nearby and then
retreat again to the south. The fox
was completely silent - there was no
wind and yet we heard nothing.

0700 We arose and checked traps with
the following results:
9 Dipodomys merriami
4 Perognathus longimembris
Success: 13/206 = 6%
Our original hope was to find
a place where only D. merriami lives,
and we believe this is the place.
