Nevada
A short time later I saw a rather
large (≈200 mm) crayfish with conspicuous
yellow bands on its claws. We
saw evidence of recent Beaver (Castor)
work or logs nearby the river and
later exploration found many more knawed
logs and fairly recent Beaver runways
in the grass. A sample of the knawed
wood and leaves from the dominant
trees were returned for further information.
1600 - we set 140 live traps on the east
side of Walker river at a point 13.5
mi. North and 18 mi. West of Hawthorne,
Nevada. Although the habitat looked
somewhat unfavorable for Microdipodops,
we choose a wash that looked
reasonable good (i.e. Sandy soil). We
then drove back across to the west
side of the river and returned [illegible]
to a point 4.5 mi. N. and 20.5 mi. W. of Hawthorne,
Nevada where we set 160 live traps.
This latter area looked much better for
finding Microdipodops although it was
separated from other favorable habitat
to the N. by rocky soil and separated
