15 September
16 Mi. W. Hawthorne, 5600', Lyon
Co., Nevada.
1130 - John and I left L.A. - arrived
Lee Vining ~ 1800. We drove over California
Hwy 167 and took the turnoff to
Larkin (dry) Lake. We had planned to
trap near Alkali dry lake, but the
road was impassable so we drove
over dirt road northealy towards
Aurora, Nevada. Sunset was ~ 2000.
Soon after sunset John noticed
a Microdipodops (megacephalus) run
across the road and easily climb
a ~1/2 meter rock boulder near the road.
Although this genus is found almost
exclusively on sandy, flat desert floors,
they appear to be quite nimble on
rocks. We drove past Fletcher, Nevada
roughly
and took the road SNE / toward Yerington.
We camped at the above locality about
2100 at which time we set out 727
live traps around camp. The vegetation
consisted almost entirely of some species
of Atriplex (we think). There were very
few Chrysotthamnus (sp.) - often associated
with Microdipodops megacephalus.
