San Bernardino Co. California 3200'
We had previously (several years ago) found numerous chuckwallas (Sauromalus) among these rocks, none were evident today (wrong time of day or season?) We did find 1 Desert Tortoise (Gopherus) on the steep hill side among the rocks (very unusual locale for a tortoise). The tortoise measured:
Dorsal Central Lateral
189 135 170
147
largest ring
dorsal center
38
"Ram" extends 1' beyond dorsal shell
2 1200 g.
Avg. nail length forefeet = 8 mm.
After camping, we walked up the slight hills to the S x E D2 camp and again observed the Thommays diggings in the friable soils of 2 or 3 small hill sides.
1700 We set up a weather station to record weather data throughout the night x 100 live traps and 132 snap traps will be checked throughout
