Hefner, MS 1974 Journal 17 August (cont) 3.8 mi. N. of Mojave (near power lines) 2787 ft., Kern Co., California Topping Success: 65/115 = ~56% The traps near camp captured: 20 D. merriami 2 D. parainitens, 1♂, 1♀ We had previously believed the above locality to have only 1 Dipodomys species (merriami), but the 2 D. parainitens captured last night showed that the two species live sympatrically here and animals here (merriami) cannot be used in my Circadian rhythm studies as allopatric from other Dipo. species. I will now change localities to find a place where D. merriami exists in allopatry from D. parainitens. 0900 We broke camp and moved to "Campsite 1." The day is very warm ~36°C. and, of course, very arid < 10° Rel. humidity. Along the road to Randsburg we stopped and hiked in the rocky hills (about ½ mile west of Randsburg).
