Sand Canyon, 0.4 mi N of Hwy 58, 2.9 mi E x S of Monolith Kern Co, California, 39°49'
T32S, R34E, NW¼ sec 27)
This was an unusually large number
of Dipodomys — despite the moon being
out last night. Many of the D. looked
like D. panamintinus and many looked
superficially like D. heermanni. However,
tthere were many morphs which appeared
intermediate. There appeared to be
slight behavioral differences between the
various morphs, in that, the D.(h.) & often
reached sand at me as I tried to pull
it from the trap, the D.(p) morphs
did this much less often.
0630 — We left the trapping site and
at ~ 7:00 we broke our fan belt
and were forced to stop in a small
town near Lancaster. We had to go to
5 Gas Stations and waste 2 hours
before we could get a new belt and
have it installed — the attendants
were very uncooperative and offered
little help —
Needless to say, Dancy didn't get
to work on time, but this was
otherwise a successful trip.
