18 May - "Campsite 1", 9.5 mi. N. Johannesburg off
I-10 Johannesburg Rd., San Bernardino Co., 3500' Calg.
Arrived here 8:30 PM last night -
Did not set out traps. Dave and Diane
were here since this A.M. No moon,
strong wind, not especially cold. In
the AM we walked about 1 mile S.
of camp into low hills. We sighted
a Western Tanager and Lesser Goldfinch.
Mourning Doves (desert variety?) were
very common as were their nests
and eggs. Nests were very poorly
constructed cups on ground beneath
bushes. Eggs were always 2, pure
white. We noted one nest with 2
young approx. 1/2 feathered. On the
hills to the S. of camp Dave showed
us some pocket gopher (Thomys) digging.
These diggings were apparently widely
separated from any others (perhaps miles?)
We captured 3 Horned Lizards on
return to camp.
1200 - broke camp and headed for
"copper-colored" hills about 3 miles SE
of Campsite 1). At the new camp,
(Darcy & J camped here last trip),
we took short walks collecting,
