Hafner, m.s. 1974 Journal 21 April - 9 mi. N. Johannesburg, in "copper-colored" hills 1 mi. E of Trona Rd., San Bernardino Co. 3200' 0800 - Checked traps with following results: 15 Perognathus longimembris 4 P. formosus 8 Dipodomys panamintius 1 D. merriami Success = 28/140 = 20% The occurrence of so many D. panamintius and so few D. merriami is very curious. The substrate appears much lighter in color and the sand and gravel is much finer (nearly powdery). Last night was much calmer than previous nights - could be a clue. 1130 - We left for home - beautiful day - About 2 mi. S. of Palmdale we sighted a Roadrunner (Geococcyx) which was running (and flying) to get across the freeway. The temp. and rel. humidity records for this trip are in the envelope at the end of the notebook
