19 April - 9.5 mi N Johannesburg in "copper-colored" hills (cont)
1 mi E of Trona Rd, San Bernardino to 3200' Caly.
In the catch last night, there was a definite positive correlation between darkness of substrate and numbers of P. formosus captured.
1300 - I took another short walk noting another Costa's Hummer (o) and a q White Crowned Sparrow. Several Ammospermophilus leucurus were seen on the hillsides. I photographed the nest that I had discovered while setting traps yesterday and noted a pair of House Finches who were apparently the crooners, The alternating A-B-A-B-etc songs of the Desert Sparrow (Amphispiza bilineata) were heard throughout the day.
In a small canyon about 200 meters from camp (SE'wardly) I found another nest like the one noted yesterday (6" ball) - I still have not seen any bird life around it. This nest was in the upper parts of a 4' cholla. I again observed the Costa's Hummer nest noting the following: 1345 - approached within 1.5 meters of nest, q on nest didnot fly -
